She creates a modern view on Haute Couture that combines fine handwork techniques with digital technology .Van Herpen forces fashion to the extreme contradiction between beauty and regeneration. It is her unique way to reevaluate reality and so to express and underline individuality.

The essence of van Herpen is expressing the character and emotions of a woman and to extend the shape of the feminine body in detail. She mixes craftsmanship- using old and forgotten techniques- with innovation and materials, inspired by nature to bring her imaginative creations into being.

The trees are in their autumn beauty, 

The woodland paths are dry,

Under the October twilight the water 

Mirrors a still sky;

Upon the brimming water among the stones 

Are nine-and-fifty swans.

The nineteenth autumn has come upon me 

Since I first made my count;

I saw, before I had well finished,

All suddenly mount

And scatter wheeling in great broken rings 

Upon their clamorous wings.

I have looked upon those brilliant creatures, 

And now my heart is sore.

All's changed since I, hearing at twilight, 

The first time on this shore,

The bell-beat of their wings above my head, 

Trod with a lighter tread.

Unwearied still, lover by lover,

They paddle in the cold

Companionable streams or climb the air; 

Their hearts have not grown old;

Passion or conquest, wander where they will, 

Attend upon them still.

But now they drift on the still water, 

Mysterious, beautiful; 

Among what rushes will they build,

By what lake's edge or pool

Delight men's eyes when I awake some day

The Art of Reynold Weidenaar

Reynold H. Weidenaar (1915-1985) was an artist from Grand Rapids, Michigan, recognized nationally as well as locally for his technical virtuosity as a draftsman and print maker. He embraced the subject matter and realism of American Regionalist art, though his depictions of the American Scene reflect a uniquely personal, often satirical perspective. Weidenaar is especially known for his mezzotint prints, particularly those of architectural subjects, such as the construction of the Mackinac Bridge.

 ON DISPLAY AT THE KALAMAZOO INSTITUTE OF ARTS

Kirk Newman was born in Dallas, Texas in 1926 and began his artistic career experimenting with abstract sculpture and painting in the exciting post-World War II era. What increasingly intrigued him, however, was the human figure and how it could speak to the complexities of the modern world.

Newman began his exploration of the figure by creating small sculptures of anonymous businessmen. While their suits identified them as figures of power and authority, their crouching, falling, and grasping postures revealed vulnerability. Cast in bronze, the figures took on an unexpected timelessness.

The Sun Rising

Busy old fool, unruly Sun,

Why dost thou thus,

Through windows, and through curtains, call on us?

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a U.S. National Lakeshore on the shore of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. It extends for 42 miles (67 km) along the shore and covers 73,236 acres (114 sq mi; 296 km2). The park offers spectacular scenery of the hilly shoreline between Munising, Michigan and Grand Marais, Michigan, with various rock formations like natural archways, waterfalls, and sanddunes.

Pictured Rocks derives its name from the 15 miles (24 km) of colorful sandstone cliffs northeast of Munising. The cliffs are up to 200 feet (60 m) above lake level. They have been naturally sculptured into shallow caves, arches, formations that resemble castle turrets, and human profiles, among others. Near Munising visitors also can view Grand Island, most of which is included in the Grand Island National Recreation Areaand is preserved separately.

The U.S. Congress made Pictured Rocks the first officially designated National Lakeshore in the United States in 1966.
