America's love affair with magazines truly began with Curtis publications.
In 1883, Cyrus Curtis successfully founded Curtis Publishing and never looked back.

Location: 601-45 Walnut Street,
Philadelphia, PA.

Style: Georgian Revival

Commissioned by: Cyrus Curtis

Curtis's daughter, Mary Louise Curtis Bok Zimbalist, founded the Curtis Institute of music.

 Dream Garden is an enormous glass mosaic designed by artist Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966),
and executed by Louis Comfort Tiffany and Tiffany Studios, .....

... for the lobby of the Curtis Publishing Building in Philadelphia,
home of the successful magazines The Ladies' Home Journal and The Saturday Evening Post.
The work was commissioned by Edward Bok, Senior Editor of the Curtis Publishing Company. 

Over a one-month period, prior to being installed in the Curtis Building,
the work was exhibited at Tiffany Studios in New York City,
attracting more than 7,000 admirers and garnering widespread critical acclaim.
 The Dream Garden took six months to install into its home in Philadelphia.

Mirror in Mirror - Self Portrait

Spiegel im Spiegel" in German literally can mean both "mirror in the mirror" as well as "mirrors in the mirror", referring to the infinity of images produced by parallel plane mirrors: the tonic triads are endlessly repeated with small variations as if reflected back and forth. The English word for this phenomenon is "enfilade."

The piece is in the tintinnabular style of composition, wherein a melodic voice, operating over diatonic scales, and tintinnabular voice, operating within a triad on the tonic, accompany each other.

The video below is The Great Gate of Kiev. Mussorgsky's grand conclusion to his suite was inspired by a plan for a gateway for the city of Kiev in the massive old Russian style crowned with a cupola in the shape of a Slavic warrior's helmet. The majestic music suggests both the imposing bulk of the edifice and a brilliant procession passing through its arches. The work ends with a heroic statement of the Promenade theme and a jubilant pealing of the great bells of the city.

In the years around 1850, with the spirit of nationalism sweeping across Europe, several young Russian artists banded together to rid their art of foreign influences in order to establish a distinctive nationalist character for their works. Leading this movement was a group of composers known as "The Five," whose members included Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Borodin, César Cui and Mily Balakirev. Among the allies that The Five found in other fields was the artist and architect Victor Hartmann, with whom Mussorgsky became close personal friends. Hartmann's premature death at 39 stunned the composer and the entire Russian artistic community. Vladimir Stassov, a noted critic and the journalistic champion of the Russian arts movement, organized a memorial exhibit of Hartmann's work in February 1874, and it was under the inspiration of that showing that Mussorgsky conceived his Pictures at an Exhibition.
